2019 GAP Proposal Objectives:
- Assess the population status of chimpanzees in key sectors of MDNP using a well-established Camera Trap Array Protocol (CTAP) that is currently being used at the Dja Biosphere Reserve in Cameroon;
- Provide passive protection through permanent field team presence at the Ganga Research Station;
- Carry out monthly monitoring of chimpanzee presence and activity through transects, monitoring of high-activity areas (e.g., termite mounds), and reconnaissance surveys at the Ganga Station;
- Provide workshops focused on:(1) training in field data collection and analysis for ecoguards, local staff and student interns; and (2) developing anti-poaching SOPs for MINFOF staff engaged in the project;
- Develop a the Mbakaou Wildlife Center to provide a focal point for community engagement and as education and research extension for additional staff and student training
- Build international capacity and foster awareness about MDNP through professional development training and expanding international education opportunities between range-country students, researchers and their US counterparts
2019 GAP Final Report Objectives:
Assess the population status of chimpanzees in MDNP to estimate the distribution andabundance of chimpanzees in the core area of MDNP where chimpanzee density is believedto be the highest.
(2)Provide passive protection through permanent field team presence at the Ganga ResearchStationby establishing a permanent camp at Ganga to support monthly biomonitoringactivities of the area’s chimpanzees andotherwildlifeand to serveasa base campforanti-poaching activitiesthat arecarriedoutby MINFOF ecogaurds.
(3)Providing professional development opportunities for rising conservation professionalsbyproviding hands-on field exercises for staff from MINFOF, WCS, local universities,and 3-month internships forstudents completing M.Sc. degree projects.
(4)Develop a citizen science camera trap programto promote awareness about MDNP’schimpanzeesin local communities and to identify points of human-wildlife conflict. (5)Continue and expand training opportunities and international education opportunitiesfora cadre ofAfrican and Americanstudents, faculty and researchersby hosting aninternational field biology course at the Ganga Research Station.
2019 GAP Proposal:
MDNPharbors the greatest habitat diversity of any protected area inCameroon. The park is located in the heart of an ecotone that joins the Gulf of GuineaandCongo Basinrainforestswith woodland savanna to the north. Due to this rich habitat diversity, Goals:
Assess the population statusofchimpanzeesin key sectors ofMDNPusing a well-established Camera TrapArray Protocol (CTAP) that is currently being used at the Dja Biosphere Reserve in Cameroon;
•Providepassiveprotection through permanent field team presence attheGanga Research Station;
