Educational Outreach at the Mbakaou Wildlife Education Center (MWEC)
Inspiring the Next Generation
Since opening in 2021, the Mbakaou Wildlife Education Center (MWEC) has become a vital bridge between communities and their natural environment. By engaging students from elementary through high school, the center ensures that conservation values take root early, nurturing a new generation of leaders committed to protecting Cameroon’s rich biodiversity.
Children Leading the Way
A hallmark of MWEC is its child-led Environmental Outreach program, where young ambassadors teach their peers and communities about conservation. This unique approach empowers children to become educators and advocates, building confidence, leadership, and a culture of stewardship that spreads organically through villages and schools.
Learning, Training, and Jobs
The center also serves as a hub for workshops, training, and hands-on activities that deepen understanding of the Mbam & Djerem National Park’s wildlife and ecosystems. By blending scientific research with local knowledge, MWEC fosters both pride and responsibility, while creating meaningful employment opportunities tied to environmental stewardship.
Community Partnerships
MWEC works closely with village leaders to design programs rooted in community priorities. Together, they are building a lasting model of education and engagement—one that strengthens conservation while investing in the people who call this remarkable landscape home.
Professional Training at the Gangah Research Station
Since 2016, the Station has been a field classroom for students, early-career scientists, and eco-guards. Through immersive courses, internships, and hands-on research, participants gain practical skills in biodiversity monitoring, conservation technologies, and community engagement. By blending global research standards with local knowledge, Gangah ensures that conservation leadership is rooted in Cameroon, fostering careers that strengthen both people and ecosystems.
